What Top to Wear With Flowing Dress Pants

How to Wear Wide Leg Pants

I'm discussing how to wear wide leg pants with different top options. Maybe you feel that wide leg pants wouldn't be flattering on you. Yet, I hypothesize that ANY person can wear ANY style with the right fit, proportions and confidence. And joining me today is Kim, from Fierce Fashion. Kim always has some wonderful ideas of how to change up items including dying things and altering them. She's also styling wide leg pants so you get even more ideas.

Quote of the day: "You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist." Indira Gandi

If you think this quote has nothing to do with how to wear wide-leg pants, I will try to argue that, LOL! To me, it says you have to try things with an open mind if you ever want to change.
While I wasn't sure about this style at first, I have grown to love it for a couple of reasons. One, the style is a nice variety from my skinny jeans and straight-cut pants. And two, they are quite a bit cooler in the hotter weather.

If you think that only a certain size woman can wear these kinds of pants, I showcased how they could work for the curvier shapes. For this how-to-wear series, I experimented with 2 different pants. You can find the information about them in the conclusion.

I decided to showcase different combinations of tops with two pairs of pants. Here are the ideas I came up with on how to wear wide-leg pants.

1-With a Looser Sweater

3-With a Monochromatic Top Tied at the Side

1- How to Wear Wide Leg Pants with a Loose Sweater

Any "rule" will tell you that if you have a voluminous bottom half, you should keep the top half tighter. Knowing that I'm not sure why this outfit works. And maybe you don't like it. However, it was one of the looks I wore at our FierceCon last October, and I was very happy with it.
Part of it could be the fact that the jeans are so whimsical and fun. Having them be a focal point can take the focus away from that idea?

The sweater is a hand-knit one that I created many years ago. I showcased it in more detail on Instagram for one of my #YarnDay Saturdays (you can click that link to see it even if you aren't on Instagram. If you do, please make sure to click the heart to tell me you liked it).
I'm also wearing my leopard booties from Walking Cradles. These have been a huge hit everywhere I go (these are still available in a couple of sizes. Search for the shoe "Shine"). And the plus is how comfortable they are.
FYI, I saw that they are coming out with a snakeskin version for the fall. Unfortunately, there won't be a huge quantity available because the president of the company wasn't sure they would be a hit. So if you want a pair, make sure to sign up for their emails! And use my link and code, JODIE15, when you purchase them.

Insider tip: The advantage of wearing shorter jeans with your ankle boots is you can show them off. When you wear them with longer jeans, they are hidden from view.

2-Tucking in your Top

To me, this is the way you see "real" stylists talk about how to wear wide-leg pants. Sure, it makes sense to pair a tighter top with the voluminous pants. However, I realize that many of you don't like to tuck in tops all the time. That's why I came up with 3 ways to tie your tee in a video a while ago.

When I first started blogging, I would hear other bloggers say how they had so many striped tops. And I didn't understand why. But now, I really like them. They are a great option for print mixing and create interest to an outfit. Exactly why I had to add in a print scarf that was gifted to me by a blog reader, Judy!! I used it to add a better color near my face.
If you worry that stripes make you look bigger, I hope you'll check out the quote I used in this post about stripes.
The sneakers I purchased from Belong Lifestyle. I love the mix of animal prints and sparkles.

If you still don't love horizontal stripes, then consider vertical ones instead?

3-Monochromatic Outfit

I rarely style a monochromatic outfit and I'm not sure why. But I figured since I ask you guys to push yourselves outside your comfort zone, I should too. In fact, I wondered if it would make the idea of how to wear wide-leg pants feel more comfortable to anyone?

Notice how I tied up my top to make it look asymmetrical. Otherwise, it was covering up some of the cute flowers.
The earrings are a pair of Pam Neri's. These were gifted, yet I have purchased other pairs from her. I just adore her creations because they are so unique and fun. Even though these are large, they are plastic thus they are very lightweight. There is only one of every piece so you'll never find someone else with the same item, yet they are reasonably priced (at least the earrings are).
I kept my shoes more neutral with my pink mules. Notice that many of these how-to-wear wide-leg pants outfits are with flats and still look great.

Insider tip: Light pink can act as a nude depending on your coloring.

Insider tip: To tie up my top, I use orthodontic elastics. Target has some that would work wonderfully. Either that or use a hair elastic. Either that or find a top that is already made with that detail, like those below.

4-Worn Casually with a Sweatshirt

This is a perfect casual day-at-home outfit. I wore the hat because my hair was a mess this day. I've been seeing a lot of loungewear and sweats advertised with the stay-at-home regulations in place, yet I'm here to say that not all comfort pieces need to be muted. You can find many colorful and fun tops too.

This striped sweatshirt I just picked up at Goodwill before they closed for the pandemic. Since I rarely wear a lot of loungewear in public, I prefer to find those pieces thrifted. While not all my purchases are preloved, I have written about tips to making second-hand shopping more successful.
The hat was picked up on the same shopping trip. It's very floppy, yet the color is perfect for my complexion.

Insider tip: Since a hat is on your head and near your face, I recommend finding ones that are a good color with your complexion. If you're in a pinch, how about painting one or dying it? BTW, I'll be posting an article about hats on Kuel Life next month. I hope you sign up to get their emails.

I'm also wearing my sequin Walking Cradles "Orleans" sneakers. I have this sneaker in 4 different colors/styles because it is so comfortable.

Short cardigan outfit

5-How to Wear Wide Leg Pants with a Cardigan

For this example talking about how to wear wide-leg pants, I chose a short cardigan. While it's the longer cardigans that are more modern right now, I still think a short cardigan can be fabulous. In fact, I posted 5 different ways to wear one recently.
Then again, I have shown a longer cardigan with wider pants in the post about 5 different looks with a long cardigan. One is with boot-cut jeans, and one is with work trousers that are flared.

Make sure you check out this beautiful necklace. My reader, Judy, who sent me that pink scarf above, also sent me this necklace she made. I have found some amazing, talented women in this journey which just warms my heart.
This sweater is actually inside out. Not that you can use this trick with all of your sweaters, but it can't hurt to try it.
And these wedge sandals are the Walking Cradles that I took on our Caribbean cruise. You can see them in many of the excursion and dinner photos.

Conclusion

Here are the details about these wide-leg pants. They are not the only ones I own now. I also have a blue pair that you saw when I showcased the fact they work for curvier shapes.
The jeans are lightweight denim with appliqued flowers. The brand is Molly Bracken and I was gifted them from Trendz Boutique in Denver when I was working with them. I had 2 women reach out to me about where they could find them a while ago. I found them still available here. Either that or you could make the flowers yourself if you're crafty. I am happy to send you a closeup of them if you would like.
And the black pants are from the Peach brand company. They were gifted as part of their marketing program of which I am no longer an ambassador. I have worn them many times because they are very comfortable. And I love the slit on the leg which has a couple of snaps to make the slit bigger or smaller.

Looking back at all of these outfits, the common theme seems to be that my top half was kept shorter. Which helps with that 1/3 to 2/3 proportion that is aesthetically pleasing.
If you do want a longer top, then you might experiment with one that is more tunic length to keep that proportion but in the opposite way. It's a great idea to explore further.

And while I didn't show any ankle boots with these examples, you can see how Lesley and Charlotte wore them.
